Childbirth Education Classes

Childbirth classes help couples learn about and prepare for the childbirth event. There are a number of methods to choose from including The Lamaze Method, The Bradley Method, the Alexander technique, HypnoBirthing, Birthing From Within, and Birthworks. While each of these methods has one or more unique qualities in their approach to labor and birth, they also have many similarities.

Two of the most popular methods are Lamaze and Bradley, and most childbirth education classes use elements from these two approaches. Both approaches teach women how to cope with labor pain while teaching a partner how to assist in the labor and delivery process .
The Lamaze Method
Lamaze teaches simple strategies for coping with labor pain, including focused breathing, moving and positioning, massage, relaxation techniques, and labor support. Information about medical procedures and pain relief are included so the mother or couple can make informed choices when the time comes. For more information, visit the Lamaze Web site.

The Bradley Method
Bradley teaches natural childbirth for childbirth where there are no medical complications. It emphasizes exercise, nutrition and deep-breathing techniques. For more information, visit the Bradley Web site.

The Birth Plan
Some childbirth education classes encourage women create a birth plan. This is a written document in which preferences about labor and delivery are spelled out. The plan includes where you want to deliver, who your support people will be and their duties, pain medications you want, etc. Your plan should be shared with the health care provider far in advance so arrangements, the doctor can make recommendations, and any needed changes to the plan can be discussed.
