Good Pregnancy Weight Gain
Most doctors agree that minimal weight gain or excessive weight gain in a pregnancy that is for a single child is unhealthy for both the mother and child. Weight gain in pregnancy may differ from one mom to another but the ideal one is between 25 to 35 pounds for a pregnancy carrying one child.
The weight that is added during pregnancy is as a result of the amniotic fluid, the extra blood for the fetus, the placenta and the baby’s weight. This weight will be lost when the pregnancy is over if one id following the correct pregnancy diet.
The number of babies in the womb will determine the amount of weight the mother will gain.
Things to Avoid While Pregnant
It is very okay for mothers to continue eating what they ate before becoming expectant so long as the calories taken daily are correct. However, these moms have been cautioned on what foods to stay away from during this time as per accepted practice and recent studies.
Doctors recommend avoidance of diet colas (with caffeine) as they are not safe for the baby. Instead they recommend that these drinks be replaced with water or milk.
Fish with mercury, raw shellfish, raw eggs, soft cheeses, pate, alcohol unwashed vegetables, smoked fish and alcohol are foods that should be avoided by pregnant women.
Getting into Shape after Delivery
The body of the mother will be working hard so as to resume the normal levels of blood and heal wounds that occurred as a result of child birth in the initial weeks. This means that no calorie reduction will be required. During lactation an extra 500 calories will be required for lactating mums for the duration that they will be lactating. All other mothers will exercise to resume to the levels they were in before getting pregnant.
Involving the Family
The family too can learn the importance of taking multivitamins in their diet and regulating the amount of food they take even as the expectant mother is practicing it.
Should the father to be start gaining weight as you are, it would be a good idea to advise him on a weight loss program after delivery. It is essential to maintain a healthy diet even after pregnancy. This is a unique period in which one grows in various dimensions, your body, your baby and the family too.
The health of your body and your baby will be directly linked to the foods you choose to eat and the weight gain during the pregnancy. These tips will help keep mom on track and baby growing with each and every trimester and beyond.
