Finding out that you are pregnant is such as joyous occasion then along comes morning sickness and suddenly you feel anything but joyous. As all mothers and expectant mothers know morning sickness is a feeling of nausea often accompanied by vomiting. Morning sickness usually occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy although in some cases it may last longer. Although there is no definitive cause of morning sickness it is believed to be brought on due to hormonal changes.

Morning sickness may be aggravated by certain lifestyle factors such as smoking, improper nutrition, lack of sleep and stress. Although a large portion of expectant mothers experience morning sickness, some do not. Some women may have brief episodes of morning sickness while others experience more severe symptoms. Each pregnancy is different too. Out of four pregnancies I only had severe morning sickness during the first one. There are certain things you can do to prevent or at least lessen the effects of morning sickness.

Eat smaller meals more frequently.

Avoid eating three large meals a day. Instead opt for smaller meals at more frequent intervals. Eating large meals can upset your stomach and take longer to digest. Large meals can also leave you feeling tired and drained.

Snack healthy.

Snack on foods such as crackers and plain popcorn. Dry toast and fruits are also good choices. They can help to relieve the feeling of nausea as well.

Avoid greasy foods.

Avoid eating foods such as bacon, sausage and fried chicken. Fried foods have a tendency to upset your stomach and increase nausea. Just the odor of these foods cooking is enough to send some women running for the bathroom. Prevent that queasy feeling by steering clear of fried foods.

Fresh air can make you feel better.

Fresh air can do wonders to alleviate that queasy feeling. So get outside and take a walk. That way you get the benefits of both exercise and fresh air.

Keep hydrated with water and ice.

Vomiting can cause dehydration so be sure to drink plenty of water. Ice chips can help to relieve the feeling of nausea too and keep you hydrated if you don't feel like drinking water.

Morning sickness isn't fun but the good news is that it doesn't last forever.
