Expectant mothers can experience many moments of discomfort during their pregnancy. Constipation can add to that discomfort. Pregnancy can slow down the process of digestion causing constipation. People are often under the misconception that constipation is a lack of bowel movements or the inability to have a bowel movement. Although this is certainly a part of being constipated there are other indications of constipation as well. Abdominal pain, hard stools and infrequent bowel movements are all indications of constipation. Diet and stress can also play a role in the development of constipation.
What can you do to ease the discomfort of constipation? There are a few steps you can take to prevent and/or ease constipation.
Drink plenty of water.
More than likely you're already aware that you should drink eight glasses of water per day. Drinking enough water really is important. Making sure you drink enough water can keep stools soft thereby preventing the discomfort of constipation.
Increase your fiber intake.
Getting enough fiber in your diet can help prevent constipation. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Crackers, toast, plain popcorn and cereal are helpful. Eating prunes and raisins can help to alleviate constipation and they're good for you.
It's important to keep active.
Keeping active can help to keep things moving smoothly, including bowel movements. A mild to moderate form of exercise such as walking can be beneficial and healthy.
Get plenty of rest.
It's also important to get plenty of rest and try to avoid unnecessary stress. It is a well known fact that stress can affect our physical health and well-being so take time to rest and relax.
If constipation persists or is accompanied by severe abdominal pain or bleeding contact your physician immediately as constipation may be an indication of other health problems. If constipation continues to cause discomfort ask your physician if you could take an over-the-counter stool softener. Your physician may also be able to prescribe one for you. Just because you are pregnant doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable.
