When it comes to parenting and drug use, all parents believe it will not happen to them. The denial of the chance that their child will be affected by peer pressure and the need to experiment with drugs is most often what leads to a real drug problem in children. Parenting does not happen the way they show it on Saturday afternoon specials. Parenting is all about being prepared for what might happen and knowing how to spot drug use if it occurs with our children.

Parenting involves being informed and knowledgeable about a plethora of topics. Unfortunately, drug use is one of those topics. Here are a few signs that your child may be trying drugs.

The smell of tobacco or alcohol is present on your child's clothing or breath.

Bizarre behavior or sudden behavior changes.

Change of lifestyle, i.e...clothing, music choice, friends, appearance, grooming, sleeping habits, eating habits.

School delinquency or change in grades for the worse.

Violent actions or attempts at self harm.

Parenting does not have a certain st of rules and neither does growing up. Children are faced every day with the opportunity to make a choice, one for the better or one for the worse. Talking to a child about those choices is the best way to keep the lines of communication open and the relationship between your parenting style and your child in line. Nothing should be secret, and not should be off limits Parenting needs to be an intimate relationship between a child and a parent.
