Respect is not something that is instilled instantly at birth, respect needs to be learned and taught by both the child and the parent. Respect needs to be the corner stone to all actions and responses by both parties. Respect needs to be important in the relationships between parent and child, parent and life, and child and life.
Parenting is one of the most challenging things that an adult has to deal with. All other aspects of life only affect one’s self and one’s significant other. Other family members may feel some aspects of one’s life events, but not to the extent that it can be over whelming or stop them from their lives. Parenting though, that presents the problem of having a life that one must care for and must nurture.
Most of life’s challenges have rules and standards of dealing with them. Parenting is a very individualistic experience, with the advice from others not necessarily working for the parent in question. There are no manuals with children, one must learn as they go. One of the first things they learn is respect for the young and fragile life they hold in their arms. There are so many things that could end that life that most parents are scared, the good parents though are respectful.
If the parents are respectful to the child, never belittling them or causing them harm except to protect them from greater harm, then the child will learn respect. Respect is not an instinct that children or adults are born with; it is a trait that is passed from parent to child during the acts of parenting. It is a skill and a virtue that must be instilled from the beginning and then can blossom through the rest of the child’s life.
Many people underestimate the importance of respect in parenting. These are the people who treat their children as burdens or objects. These are not true parents or guardians, they are simply birth parents who have chosen to keep the child rather than give it to a family that would truly love and respect him or her. Those people are also the people who are less likely to have respect for others or know respect themselves.
