Weight Loss
About half of all Americans go on some kind of weight loss diet every year. Many people find it difficult to lose weight, and even more find it harder to keep lost pounds off. Because of this, people are turning to health care professionals or commercial weight loss programs for help.
Finding the right weight loss program for you is a matter of finding a program that will motivate you enough to reduce your calorie intake and increase calories burned through exercise or other physical activity. Not all weight loss programs work for all people, so it's important to find a program that is the best fit for your weight loss needs, your general health condition and lifestyle.
Choosing A Weight-Loss Program
Whether you create your own or choose to follow a commercial weight loss program you want to make sure it's safe. A safe diet will be low in calories but still include recommended daily allowances for vitamins, minerals and protein. The program should be geared to achieve slow, but steady, weight loss with benchmark goals that are reasonable
(and therefore safely achievable). With most diets, losing a pound a week is a reasonable expectation and a safe goal.
For any weight loss program to have long term success it must contain these three components: 1) It improves eating habits, 2) It increases physical activity, 3) It changes certain lifestyle habits.
Other Considerations When Choosing A Weight Loss Program:
• What is the cost of the program, including meals and necessary dietary supplements?
• Is the program administered by qualified counselors and health professionals?
• Do food choices include a safe variety?
• What is the success rate of the program?
• Is weight maintenance part of the plan?
