The Cookie Diet

There has been much publicity for the "Cookie Diet" which contends that Thyroid problems are often responsible for weight loss failures. There are several diets that use the term "Cookie Diet". Dr. Sanford Siegal, a Miami, Florida physician, is usually credited as being the first to widely use the term Cookie Diet and the diet is often referred to as the Siegal Diet or the Siegal Cookie Diet. Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet started as a physician supervised weight loss center. The diet uses "secret formula" cookies that are not really cookies in the traditional sense, instead, they are a combination of fiber and amino acids designed to make you feel full with a minimum of calories. Patients on the Cookie Diet program eat 6 cookies per day, and a sensible dinner. Dinner being the only regular meal each day.

The diet instructs people to drink plenty of water which also makes them feel full. The physician supervised program often prescribes supplements to address the effects of having the additional fiber in the diet. The goal of the program is to get you to subsist on a mere 800 calories per day (the average person requires approximately 2,000 to maintain their weight). It is claimed that the average dieters loss is 10 - 12 pounds per month. The physician supervised approach involves blood-work, thyroid testing, and sometimes medications.
