With increasing rates of obesity in this country, more and more Americans are turning to diet pills as a means of losing weight. Unfortunately, many people believe that popping a few pills each day can be a shortcut to easy and long-term weight loss. Diet pills are only fully effective when combined with a regular exercise routine and a nutritious diet.

With so little regulation and information available regarding diet pills and weight loss supplements, the average consumer may feel overwhelmed when considering the use of one of these products. Most diet pills, both prescription and over-the-counter, can be ordered online or picked up at your local pharmacy. It is important to thoroughly research any diet pill or supplement before you make a purchase, and be wary of any website selling diet pills that does not offer a complete list of ingredients, side effects, and health contraindications.

Over-the-counter diet pills do not need to be evaluated or approved by the FDA, and some of them can cause serious side effects. It is important to consult your doctor before taking prescription or over-the-counter diet pills, and to let your doctor know of any supplements you are currently taking.

Information on five of the most popular, ephedra-free, diet pills can be found below.

Meridia (sibutramine):

Meridia is a prescription appetite suppressant that acts on the appetite control center in the brain, causing a person to feel fuller more quickly. This medication alters the levels of two important
neurotransmitters in the brain, norepinephrine and serotonin.

Meridia has been known to raise blood pressure and increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack in some people. Other side effects include headaches, insomnia, increased sweating, rapid heartbeat, and dry mouth. Those with a history of high blood pressure, seizures, kidney disease, and glaucoma should not take Meridia. Use should also be avoided in pregnant and nursing mothers.

Meridia should be taken on an empty stomach, once each day. A one month supply of Meridia costs about 120 dollars per month, and is generally not covered under insurance plans.

Alli (orlistat):

Alli is a lower-dose, over-the-counter version of Xenical. Alli is a lipase inhibitor, and blocks dietary absorption of fat by attaching to enzymes involved in the breakdown of fat from food. Alli is the only FDA approved, over-the-counter weight loss medication currently available.

Alli is considered safe for use by most people, and there have been no reports of serious health consequences as a result of taking this medication. Side effects from this medication include fatigue, increased gas, oily discharge or diarrhea, and vomiting.
Alli can be taken up to three times a day with meals, and costs approximately 54 dollars per month. A starter pack of Alli includes a month's supply of pills, a carrying case, a food journal, a fat and calorie counter, and a guide to current dietary guidelines.

Phentermine:

Phentermine is a prescription diet pill that acts as an appetite suppressant by stimulating the hypothalamus and altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. Phentermine was first approved by the FDA as an appetite suppressant in 1959, and is also sold under the brand names Adipex-P and Ionamin.

Serious side effects have been reported with the use this medication, such as hallucinations, allergic reactions, and irregular heartbeat. Phentermine should only be used under the strict supervision of a medical professional. Phentermine may cause insomnia, dry mouth, upset stomach, diarrhea, irritability, and constipation. People that suffer from heart disease, glaucoma, anxiety, seizures, diabetes, or arteriosclerosis should not take this medication. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also not use this diet medication.

Phentermine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before eating. It is possible to overdose on this diet pill, and usage should be limited to no more than a few weeks as it is considered by many to be habit-forming. A supply of 30 capsules of Phentermine costs about 30 dollars at most online pharmacies.

Bontril (Phendimetrazine):

Bontril is a prescription diet pill that suppresses appetite by stimulating the central nervous system. It produces feelings of satiety by stimulating the hypothalamus and limbic areas of the brain.

Side effects of Bontril include, restlessness, anxiety, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, diarrhea, dizziness, and changes in sex drive. Some serious side effects have been reported with the use of this diet pill, including allergic reactions, high blood pressure, difficulty urinating, and hallucinations. Please report any of these side effects to your doctor immediately. Bontril should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or by those suffering from heart disease, glaucoma, anxiety, seizure disorders, diabetes, or thyroid problems.

Bontril should be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. This medication can cause both physical and psychological addiction, and should only be used short term under the care of a medical professional. A supply of 30 tablets of Bontril PDM costs approximately 26 dollars.

Xerisan ASA:

Xerisan ASA is an ephedra-free herbal diet pill that contains synephrine, phaseolus vulgaris, picolinate, and pyrovate. Xerisan ASA blocks the alpha-amylase enzyme, which reduces the amount of carbohydrates that are broken down into glucose. This medication also helps boost metabolic activity without the cardiovascular side effects common to many other diet pills.

Xerisan ASA can be purchased over-the-counter, and no serious side effects have been reported for this herbal diet pill.

Xerisan ASA should be taken 30 minutes prior to each meal for no longer than four months. A 20-day supply of this supplement costs approximately 70 dollars, and can be ordered through most online pharmacies that sell diet pills and weight loss products.
