There are people all over the world that dread the winter months. This dread is not rooted in the fact that Christmas is far too expensive, it is rooted in the fact that with the winter months comes the onset of SAD. SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, is a type of depression that affects people when the weather turns cold.

There is very little known about the true cause of SAD, but some doctors believe it has something to do with the inability to be outside as openly as during the summer months. Paired with the lack of sun exposure and SAD can cause a normally vibrant person to become an agoraphobic in no time flat.

In order to deal with the onset of SAD season, doctors recommend using light therapy or anti-depressants to rebound from the affects.

Light Therapy and SAD

Light therapy is offered to SAD patients in two varieties. The Bright Light Box and the Dawn Simulation Box.

The Bright Light Box is used in the morning hours. People dealing with SAD sit in front of the box for a set period of time each morning.

The Dawn Simulation Box is used during the hours of sleep. The box is programmed to turn on and gradually lighten as the morning hours approach.

Anti-Depressants and SAD

If light therapy is not working for a patient with SAD, anti-depressants will often be prescribed. The dosage and type of anti-depressant will vary from patient to patient. There are many anti-depressants on the market that can help lift some of the depressive feelings associated with SAD. The medication is normally only taken during the months the patient is affected by the disorder.

Dealing with SAD is a very real concern for many people. Just as is the case with other forms of depression, SAD causes both physical and mental symptoms that can have a very real effect on every day life.
