As more and more people have become determined to lead healthy lives, exercise and its many forms have also become more popular. In the recent years, a lot of gyms, specialized weight training centers and sports clubs have surfaced, giving people more choices for their preferred exercise regimen. Traditional and non-traditional forms of exercise have both surfaced --- from customary aerobics to rigorous boxing to "air cycling" and now to Pilates. Pilates, a groundbreaking method of exercise which purportedly stemmed from the principles of Joseph Pilates, is very popular these days for its slower yet highly effective approach to good health and slender body. It has enjoyed (and still enjoys) quite a number of followers all over the world including celebrities, some of whom have already become happy endorsers or expert trainers even.

Benefits of Pilates
What makes Pilates unique is its ability to help build muscle strength and power but without creating bulk in the human body. Instead, it tones down the body and produces flat abs, thin thighs and slender arms, which are normally difficult to do with other methods of exercise. Since it helps develop a stronger core, which refers to the center of the human body, Pilates can join together the trunk, shoulder girdle and pelvis and such produce more flexible joints and ultimately, an evenly conditioned body. The tendencies for muscle to elasticize and for joints to elongate are also heightened. Pilates also requires grace, patience, will and devotion since there will be a lot of stretching, proper breathing methods, proper alignment of the spine and pelvis and other low impact styles involved. No worries here, though, as all the exercises involved do not overstrain the muscles.

Other advantages
Apart from what it does to the body, Pilates is also known to soothe back pain and joint inflammation. Pilates has the power to train one to have good posture, graceful movement and become more aware of his or her body. This makes Pilates ideal for ballet dancers or those that need to master fluid moves. It improves nimbleness, balance and litheness. Since this type of exercise also helps reduce stress and tension, enhance blood circulation and helps build and maintain a stronger spine, it is also now being employed in physical therapy sessions. Regular Pilates sessions will evenly balance the musculature and ultimately, this will lead to lesser chances of injuries (or faster recovery from an injury) and a better feeling for the patient. Pilates is also very popular for letting the mind connect with the body and letting the mind understand where the body is currently at, so to speak, and what should be done in order to improve its movements and state (also called neuromuscular coordination). Moreover, Pilates is now being incorporated in sports trainings because not only does it help in terms of fitness and health but it also helps increase stamina. Pilates may be far from the demanding exercise regimen that most people are used to but it has been proven many times over that it can produce the same (and even better) results.
