In our busy world, we tend to blur the line between men and women on many occasions. But, fitness does not seem to be catching up with the rest of our thoughts and actions. Men are still the major forces in the vitamin and supplement world of protein shakes, but women are catching on to their games.

On a recent visit to a major supplement shop, the husband was talking to the salesperson about the best supplements and powdered shakes to add to his daily diet to increase muscle mass. I listened to the conversation intently just as I had a million times before. Once the pros and cons of every powder and pill in the shop was discussed, the sales person began to walk away. It instantly hit me that he had not asked if I needed any help.

I approached the salesperson and began to talk about the supplements that women should be taking to help with an overall better diet and lean protein choices. The same powdered shakes that my husband was recommended were the ones I was told to take. You know what ladies, we can take those shakes too!

It seems that the protein shakes are made up of the leanest protein available. The shake I purchased was had 80 calories a scoop, 1g of sugar and 1g of fat with a whopping 20g of protein.

As I inquired further about the health needs of women versus men, I was pointed in the direction of an EFA (essential fatty acids) supplement (as was my husband) and an L Glutamine powder to mix in my shake (as was my husband). As a matter of fact, the only supplement that I was not told to take was a testosterone boosting, muscle shredding pill. I couldn't figure out why.

At the end of the trip, I had spent twice as much money as I intended to spend, but was wiser for the purchase. It seems that according to this certified nutritionist, men and women have many of the same needs everyday and there is nothing wrong with shake up a little powder to get in all that lean protein we all need, without the fat!
