Low carbohydrate dieting were one of the most popular trends a few years ago. Atkins and South Beach were the top two names in carbohydrate restriction dieting. The negative press surrounding these dieting plans caused everyone to cringe at the words low-carb. But, years after the rage and press has died down, low-carb dieting is now a very real choice as a weight loss option.

The first thing that needs to be understood about low-carb dieting is that not all low-carb diets are high in fat. The Atkins diet centered on a high fat, low-carb, high protein alternative to dieting. With a very small of carbohydrates to burn as fuel, the body turned to ketosis or fat burning in order to continue normal daily function. The debate over the long term effects of this eating choice, made the Atkins diet very unpopular. And, to this day, Atkins seems to be synonymous with low-carb in many people's minds.

Current low-carb choices are as far from the Atkins diet as you could get. Low-carb means replacing the sugar for sugar-free options. Low-carb means eating brown, natural rice instead of bleached and stripped white rice. Low-carb means choosing carbohydrates that care natural and great for the body and skipping processed foods all together.

One of the healthiest dieting choices available for weight loss today would have to be the low-carb diet. Eating healthy grains, high levels of fiber and vitamin rich whole foods as a dieting choice will never do the body wrong.
