This fall there is a huge focus on the flu-like symptoms surrounding the H1N1 virus. With more and more cases being diagnosed every day, simple changes in diet and daily routines can ward off this flu and leave you feeling better than ever before.

1. Too much antibacterial hand sanitizer is not a good thing. Every doctor is preaching the use of antibacterial hand sanitizer to keep out the germs that cause the flu. What if using too much will hurt more than help? These sanitizers kill off all the germs on the skin, including the ones that help fight off harmful bacteria. Instead of using a hand sanitizer every 10 minutes, try to wash your hands in warm running water more often.

2. Exercise does more than keep you fit. Exercise has been linked to a reduction in depression. Did you know depression can cause your immune system to falter? People who are depressed have a tendency to have both physical and mental symptoms. Exercise releases hormones into the brain that help fight off depression and keep you feeling great about yourself. In the mean time, your immune system is give a one-two boost.

3. Omega 3 is not optional. Omega 3 fatty acids are good for your heart and your immune system. If you don’t like the taste of fish, there are Omega 3 chews in a variety of flavors and fish oil capsules that can be taken every morning (or multiple times a day). The balance between Omega 3s, 6s and 9s is essential so make sure you are eating enough of all three.

4. Skip the caramel coloring. Caramel colorings used in breads and sodas (even diet sodas) has been linked to a reduction in the immune system. These colorings are most often added to colas. While water and unsweetened green teas are the best choice, if you must drink a diet soda try the brands that are clear.

5. Keep your hands, feet and drinks to yourself. In kindergarten, they teach children to keep their hands and feet to themselves. The same goes for drinks and foods this fall. Sharing food and drink is the best way to share germs. If you want to stay away from the flu, be a mean friend and say no when a friend asks for a bite or a drink.

This fall, staying healthy is about changing how we treat our bodies. These five tips, paired with a healthy dose of daily Vitamin C, will keep away those flu-like symptoms that can force you into bed for days at a time.
