Tightening your tummy for the summer can seem a daunting task. However, with a little bit of hard work and dedication, it can be done quickly and efficiently. In fact, the whole process can be fun! Most people that want a tight, defined stomach will immediately start to do sit ups and crunches until they cannot feel their abs. While this may help to build strength in your top four ab muscles, it ignores important ab muscle areas and also ignores the most important step to tightening a stomach: the layer of fat covering the abs. Lots of people do not realize that in order to be able to see abs, the layer of fat above them must be tremendously diminished or removed all together.

To remove the layer of fat above the abs it takes diet and cardio exercise. The main thing to be focusing on is burning more calories than you consume. It is imperative to remove processed sugars, especially high fructose corn syrup, sodas, processed or packaged foods, white bread, white pasta and white flour from your diet. These foods all trigger the body into storing fat by drastically raising the blood sugar. Try substituting with a lot of fresh fruits or raw vegetables which will help you to burn calories, increase metabolism and satisfy cravings. Cardio exercise can be as easy as walking or jogging around the block. Any exercise that burns calories is sufficient. However, keep track of your calories to ensure you are burning more than you are consuming.

Once you are on the way to removing the layer of fat above the abs, you can begin strengthening your abs to make them tight and defined. There are a few different exercises that are effective in targeting different areas of the abs. A simple crunch is a good way to target the upper abdominals. Leg extensions on a roman chair are extremely good at strengthening your lower abdominals. An exercise aptly named the "bicycle" is great for strengthening your core and oblique muscles. Simply lay on your back in a crunch position. Raise your legs and begin to peddle as if you were on a bicycle and you will immediately being to feel the burn!

It is important to switch your routine of exercises every month or every other month. If you continue with the same exercise routine, your muscles will become accustomed to the program and will stop growing. With a little hard work and dedication, you can tighten your tummy for the summer!
