We all know that it is important to exercise. Leading a sedentary lifestyle is not healthy yet most of us don't get enough exercise. For some of us the reasons why we should exercise are obvious but in case they're not here are five reasons to exercise.

Exercise for better health.

Proper exercise can improve your cardiovascular health as well as improve circulation. People who lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle can be more susceptible to poor circulation, blood clots and other health conditions. Exercise also strengthens the immune system thereby lowering one's risk of colds and flu-like viruses.

Exercise to burn calories.

Exercise burns calories and helps to boost metabolism. Although the amount of calories you burn depends on the type and duration of the exercise even taking a walk at a moderate pace each day can be beneficial. In fact, walking is a wonderful form of exercise that is suitable for people of all ages.

Exercise for more energy.

People who don't exercise on a regular basis tend to assume that exercise will make you tired and drain you of energy. Actually the opposite is true. Regular exercise will increase your energy levels and build stamina. Of course if your lifestyle has been rather sedentary for quite some time you will likely tire easily when you first embark on a regular exercise routine. As you make exercise a regular part of your lifestyle you will see that your energy does increase. You will feel more energetic when going about your daily activities.

Exercise to improve your self-esteem.

As you commit yourself to getting more exercise you will eventually re-shape your body. You will strengthen your muscles, burn calories and trim body fat. Your body will become slimmer, stronger and more toned. As these changes begin to take place you and others will view your body as more appealing and attractive. People who are unhappy with the way their body looks may suffer from low self-esteem. As you re-sculpt your body through exercise you also raise your self-esteem. People who are happy with the way they look and feel also tend to be more confident. So you see that exercise has many benefits. Not only does it improve your health and appearance but also your self-esteem.

Exercise to relieve stress.

Exercise can even help relieve stress. Life can be hectic, demanding and stressful. We often carry around the day's stress like excess baggage we forget to put down. Stress can make us tired, irritable and feeling drained. We can feel the physical effects of stress in our bodies as tension knots up in our neck and back. Muscles become stiff and achy and tension headaches may result. Exercise can help release the stress and tension built up in your muscles and mind.

There are many benefits of exercise and we have just covered a few of the most common and obvious ones. Although exercise has many positive benefits you should always consult your physician before initiating a new form of exercise or before beginning an exercise regimen. Get a complete physical examination to make sure you are in good health. Consult your doctor and ask him/her to suggest the best form of exercise for your age and health.
