Coloring Hair with Henna

If you prefer to use henna to commercial hair coloring, you'll find it's a less harsh way to color your hair, but the drawback is that it takes longer to do. You can apply it at home, but plan on about 6-7 hours to allow the henna to do a thorough job. There are several tips which you can use to get the best results for the application.

First, instead of mixing with hot water, use strong hot coffee. This will tone down the brassy look and provide a more natural appearance upon completion. To thicken the henna mixed with black coffee, use pre-beaten eggs. This allows the henna to coat each strand of hair, which is vital when using henna as opposed to a commercial coloring product. The egg/henna consistency should be about the consistence of pudding. Too thick and it doesn't get to each hair as it must. Too thin and it's so watery it won't stay where it needs to be.

You need to make sure the henna mix is applied along the grow out line and blended into the existing color. Then place a shower cap over your head and leave it on for a least six hours. You can test periodically for completion, but don't get in too much of a hurry. Adding extra water about every hour and using a dryer or hot towel over the shower cap helps to keep the process working correctly.

Finish the job with a thorough warm water rinse. You can't use shampoo as it will affect the hair you've just colored. You can, however use a drop or two of a good conditioner to leave your hair in tip-top shape.

The color process with henna is more involved and takes more time than using a commercial hair product, but it is also less harsh on your hair.
