Michael Moore, infamous documentary filmmaker, conscious champion of the defenseless, but the next best businessman?
The director of controversial documentaries such as Roger and Me, Shooting for Columbine, Fahrenheit 911 and now, more recently, his healthcare piece, Sicko had earned himself a hefty deal that not even Steven Spielberg or George Lucas could boast!
In an almost unheard of deal that has Hollywood as a whole standing up on its hind quarters, Michael Moore negotiated payday massacre for his latest epic documentary, Sicko: 50 percent of the film’s total profits!
Keeping in perspective Fahrenheit 9/11’s total budget was $6,000,000.00 which is a low budget for any film but fairly high for a documentary. Its worldwide gross was over $222,000,000.00 so if Sicko does anywhere near as well as any of Moore’s other films, he can expect a paycheck of tens of millions of dollars.
“It’s a really interesting irony for me,” Moore says of this exceptional financial positioning. “What it should do to me is remind me every single day that I have an even greater responsibility to do good with the success that I have been blessed with. I need to make sure that I am able to make the next film with the money that I have made on this film. The money allows me to never have to give in, never compromise. Nothing can ever be held over my head in the sense of, ‘If you don’t do this, we won’t give you your money!’ ‘Oh, wow, I guess I’ll be in really bad shape, won’t I?’ That’s an enormous bit of freedom that I have — to stay completely true to the things I believe in. But I have an even greater responsibility because I have been blessed with that great success. I challenge myself with that, constantly.”
