When most people go to the store they don't give a lot of thought to soap unless they happen to be allergic to a particular brand. People may choose a certain soap because they like the scent or they may try to save money by purchasing the least expensive brand. We all want to save money and may need to shop within a specific budget but we should choose our soap carefully. Spending a few more dollars or cents can certainly be worth it when it comes to caring for your skin properly.

There are some things you should know about the soap you are using. Some soaps are more akin to using a detergent rather than soap. Alkali is a common ingredient in soap that can irritate your skin. If you've ever wondered why your soap leaves your skin feeling dry and itchy the alkali contained in the soap is one likely culprit. Most soaps contain isopropyl alcohol and other ingredients that can irritate your skin. In fact, most commercial soaps contain harmful chemicals that can irritate and damage skin. Using these soaps can aggravate existing skin problems, cause skin to become dry and even cause skin to age prematurely.

So what can you do to protect your skin? Start by choosing your soap wisely. Read the list of ingredients and avoid soaps laden with chemicals. Choose soaps made with natural ingredients such as aloe vera, cocoa butter and vegetable oils such as palm, olive and coconut. Herbal soaps can be a good choice. If you suffer from dry skin buy a good moisturizing soap and steer clear of products with harsh chemicals that will only make your dry skin worse. Glycerin soap is an excellent choice for those with dry skin. Glycerin helps skin to keep moisture in and keeps skin from drying out. Soap that contains glycerin is also good for children and those with sensitive skin.

Most people are unaware of the damage soap can do to their skin. Antibacterial soaps also contain chemicals that can damage skin. When we purchase soap we are thinking of it in terms of cleanliness only not skin protection. We need to re-think the way we buy soap. It is possible to cleanse our bodies properly without damaging our skin. Choose your soap wisely for the health of your skin. After all, you only have one skin. Treat it with care.
