If you're "old hat" when it comes to living a low-chemical lifestyle, you already know about essential oils. But if all this is new to you, you owe it to yourself to check out a group of products that herbalists, botanists and everyone else working in "natural" medicine know as "essential oils".
Despite their name, essential oils aren't actually oils at all--at least not chemically. Essential oils are volatile liquids that are obtained directly (or with minimal processing) from plants. Often highly fragrant, essential oils make fantastic air fresheners. Best of all, they don't leave you with that burning sensation in your nose that you often get from regular air freshening sprays.
How do you know which essential oil to use where? Well, some essential oils just seem to make sense in some rooms. For example, I love the clean, antiseptic scent of eucalyptus in the bathroom. But you may prefer something a little lighter--maybe a floral like jasmine or a citrus like lemon. Let your own preferences be your guide. After all, it's your house.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR EVERY ROOM
In the kitchen, consider using one of the culinary essential oils. Rosemary, with its antiseptic scent, is a classic favorite. But you may prefer to use a spice like cinnamon, clove or pepper. In the bathroom, the bracing scent of eucalyptus makes the bathroom feel clean and fresh. But a light rose scent will invoke memories of Great-Grandmother's victorian-themed bathroom.
For the family room, consider a fun, light citrus. Sweet orange is a wonderful oil to use around children and it's hard to beat lemon for its fun, sunny scent. Don't have kids? Prefer something a bit more sophisticated? Try one of the deep wood oils like cedar or even sandalwood for a warm, embracing feeling.
In the bedroom, few oils are more classic than lavender. But if the slightly medicinal scent is off-putting to you, consider the heady romantic scent of ylang-ylang. Or the spicy undertones of frankincense.
Working in a home office? Try a little peppermint for an instant "wake-up".
And forget everything you've heard about oils being "relaxing", "stimulating" or "empowering".The most important thing is how an oil makes you feel. There are no real rules when it comes to essential oils. Just choose your favorite scents and make them a part of your daily lives.
