Even though face lifts are an elective surgery, they still carry with them serious complications and risks. Here are a few of the complications associated with face lifts and risks associated with face lifts.
Some of the possible complications associated with face lifts are abnormal facial contour, attached earlobes, blistering of the skin, early relapse, keloids (which is heavy scarring), loss of sideburns, skin irregularities, skin necrosis (which is when the skin dies), tight face, visible scars and weak facial muscles. Injury to facial nerves is also a possibility, which can cause facial weakness or paralysis. This weakness or paralysis may be temporary or permanent. While the likelihood of complications from a face lift are rare, they are still a possibility that the patient must consider before choosing to have a face lift.
A patient can greatly reduce their risk of complications from a face lift by choosing a board certified plastic surgeon and accredited surgical center or hospital for the procedure. A patient is also at a much lower risk factor if he/she is not a smoker. Smokers have a 1500% higher risk of complications such as skin necrosis than a non smoker.
Along with the complications that are associated with face lifts the patient must also beware of the complications that are associated with any medical surgery. These complications also apply to face lifts as it is a medical surgery. These complications include infections, bleeding, reactions to anesthesia, blood clots and drop in blood pressure. There are also many complications that are associated with anesthesia that a patient should consider when choosing to go under the knife for face lifts. These risk factors are higher if the patient is over weight, a smoker, recent traumatic injury or has a history of heart, lung or nervous system disorders.
Any person considering a face lift should consult a licensed plastic surgeon, as well as, their medical physician, to discuss the risk and complications associated with a face lift procedure.
