Nail care at home
Our nails are an indicator of one's health. Regular nail care is an important part of our body hygiene. Though pampering yourself at a beauty salon is an ideal way of getting your nails manicured and taken care of, it is not the always the best option for all. For one, it can be a bit heavy on the pockets. Moreover, in our fast-paced lifestyle it can be something one keeps putting off.
Well, if you can't spare the time to visit a salon, you can always give your nails a little bit of tender, loving care at home. What's more, it does not take too much of your time, and you can schedule it at your convenience.
Let's get started then. What you need to have is a nail clipper, nail file or emery board, a wooden cuticle, some cuticle oil and nail polish.
Removing old nail polish - Start with removing old lacquer using nail-polish remover and a paper towel or a cotton pad.
Shaping your nails -
Shorten the nails using the nail clipper. It is recommended that you cut your nails straight across first. File your nails while they're dry, as it gives you a better shape then after soaking. You can choose between square or oval. It is a good idea that your nail tip's shape should mirror the curve of your cuticle (eg, if your cuticles are rounded, the nail tip should be oval, if they run straight across the nail, then your tips should be squared). that is, if your cuticles go straight across your nail bed, your tip should be squared; if your cuticles are softly rounded, your tip should be oval).
On to cuticles -
Swipe a bit of cuticle oil across the base of each nail. This will condition the cuticle and nail. Next step involves pushing back the cuticles with the cuticle stick. Removing the cuticle skin clinging to the nail, adds length to the nail. For this, place the wooden stick flat against your nail and gently push toward your finger. Be gentle as pushing too hard can injure your nail, of you may pull the cuticle away from the nail plate, resulting in infection. Wash away the cuticle oil with water and dry your nails.
Painting the nails -
Always begin at the center of your nail. Paint one stroke down the center and then the sides of the nail. You should paint a nail in three strokes. Apply the second coat only when this is completely dry. Use a base coat before applying nail polish. Then apply a color of your choice. You should apply three coats of color.
Does it seem like a lot, be rest assured, the entire process takes not more than 30 minutes. After undergoing this simple beauty treatment at home, the least one can do is to keep your nails out of your mouth. Biting can damage both the nail and cuticle, affecting its shape and growth.
