Dealing with an Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails can be very painful. In this article we will look at the causes, treatment and measures you can take to prevent ingrown toenails.

What is an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the corners of a nail dig into the skin causing pain, redness and swelling. An ingrown toenail can become infected and if left untreated may require surgery to remove the part of the nail that is digging into the skin. In some cases, the whole nail may need to be removed.

What causes ingrown toenails?

Ingrown toenails may have many different causes. An ingrown toenail may be caused by shoes that are too tight or otherwise do not fit properly. Leaving toenails grow too long can also result in ingrown toenails. There are also people who have a genetic predisposition to conditions such as ingrown toenails. People who suffer from diabetes may be more likely to develop an ingrown toenail.

How is an ingrown toenail treated?

Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom's salt for 15 minute intervals 2 to 3 times a day. By placing a small piece of cotton under the corner of the nail you may be able to prevent the nail from digging further into the skin.

When should you see a doctor?

If pain worsens or swelling and/or redness persists you should see a physician. If left untreated severe infection could occur. If there is swelling, inflammation or discharge medical attention is needed since an antibiotic will be required to clear up the infection. The toe with the infected toenail should be cleaned with an antiseptic and bandaged to keep it clean and protected.

Can ingrown toenails be prevented?

Although you may not be able to completely prevent ingrown toenails there are steps you can take to lessen the chances of developing an ingrown toenail. Be sure to trim your toenails regularly. Toenails should be cut straight across. Cutting toenails in a curved position increases the chances of the nail growing into the skin. When purchasing shoes make sure they fit properly. Shoes that do not fit properly can cause all sorts of foot problems. Wear slippers around the house to prevent stubbing toes. People often get up in the middle of the night and stub their toes on the bed, dresser or other furniture. Stubbing a toe can result in a cracked toenail that could become infected. By keeping a night light on and wearing slippers when you get up you can prevent such accidents. Proper foot care can help prevent ingrown toenails.
